What building AI for Sweden's psychologists and social services taught us

Sweden is a demanding environment for building AI for sensitive work - and that is a strength. The EU's GDPR, Swedish healthcare data law and social services confidentiality rules set a high floor, and public-sector buyers ask hard questions in procurement: where is data stored, who can access it, what are the models trained on?
Those requirements shaped Edith Care from day one. Encryption, access control, audit logging and EU hosting are not afterthoughts but foundation. And some principles we made absolute commitments: patient data is never used to train AI models, and the AI never makes decisions - every judgment is made by a qualified professional.
But the most important lessons came from the profession, not the regulations. When we validated the need with psychologists in Region Östergötland in the spring of 2026, the recognition was strong: roughly half of assessment time goes to processing, evaluating and writing, and the clinical history is the most time-consuming step. The panel's mandate was clear - keep building a tool that supports the whole flow, with the psychologist in control.
The validation also produced a less expected insight: administrative work can sometimes function as recovery between demanding patient sessions. A tool that optimizes away every administrative minute would be built wrong. The goal is not zero administration - it is removing the mentally taxing compilation work and leaving the professional in charge of their own time.
We see the same pattern in social services: casework where documentation requirements are high for good reasons, where legal certainty and traceability are non-negotiable, and where technology has to earn trust before it gets a place in the workflow.
Building for the world's most demanding environments first is a deliberate choice. Principles that hold up in Swedish psychiatry and social services - human control, no training on sensitive data, transparent documentation - hold up everywhere. That is the foundation we stand on as Edith Care grows into new markets.
